Scanned document cleanup

Remove pen marks from scanned documents

To remove pen marks from a scanned document, upload a clear JPG, PNG, or WEBP image and Handwriting Eraser cleans handwritten notes, circles, ticks, signatures, and annotations while keeping the printed document layout where possible.

Clean marked-up scans without rebuilding the document. Use standard cleanup for simple pen marks on clear scans, or advanced cleanup for tilted phone photos, faint writing, messy annotations, and marks that cross printed text. For scanned PDFs, use PDF mode and choose only the pages that contain pen marks.

What is scanned document pen-mark removal?

Scanned document pen-mark removal detects handwritten notes, circles, checkmarks, signatures, marginal annotations, and stray pen strokes on a document image, then removes those marks while preserving printed text, tables, figures, and the original scan layout as much as possible.

How it works

Clean the scan, keep the document structure.

1

Upload a scanned document image.

Upload a clear scanned image or phone photo in JPG, PNG, or WEBP format. Flat, well-lit scans with readable printed text work best.

2

Run standard or advanced cleanup.

Use standard cleanup for everyday pen marks at 1 credit per image. Use advanced cleanup (5 credits) when marks are faint, dense, tilted, or overlapping the printed text.

3

Download the cleaner document copy.

Review the result, download the cleaned image, or use PDF mode if the scanned document is stored as a multi-page PDF.

Scanned document pen-mark removal FAQ

Can it remove annotations from scanned documents?

Yes. This page covers handwritten annotations too: margin notes, circles, ticks, arrows, signatures, and other pen marks. Very dense markup or marks directly over printed text may need advanced cleanup.

Will printed text stay readable?

The cleanup is designed to keep printed text, tables, figures, and page layout while removing handwritten marks. Results depend on scan quality and how much the pen mark overlaps the print.

Can it remove signatures?

It can remove many handwritten signatures or initials from scanned images, but do not use cleanup to misrepresent a legal document. Keep an original copy when compliance or audit trails matter.

Should I use standard cleanup or advanced cleanup?

Use standard cleanup for clear scans with simple pen marks. Use advanced cleanup (5 credits) for tilted phone photos, faint writing, heavy annotations, or marks crossing printed text.

Can I clean scanned PDFs?

Yes. Use the PDF handwriting remover for scanned PDFs. Select only the pages that contain pen marks; unselected pages are copied through untouched.

Can I process several scanned documents at once?

Yes. Batch mode handles multiple scanned images and downloads successful cleaned results as a ZIP. Batch and PDF modes currently use standard cleanup.

Do I need an account?

No for a quick single-image trial. Each browser session includes 2 standard cleanups and 1 advanced cleanup. Create an account for more credits, batch processing, history, or PDF cleanup.

Are uploaded scans stored?

Original scans are released after processing and are not used for training. Signed-in cleaned results stay in history for up to 3 days, then they are deleted.
